Tree of Life

Wall art Festival in Inawashiro 2020

November 1, 2020

Higashi Junior High School (Inawashiro, Fukushima, Japan)

Soil, ash, soot, etc.

Using soil, ash, soot, and other materials collected in Inawashiro, a 6m80cm mural was created on two pillars of the East Junior High School.
The rich nature of Inawashiro was expressed with the symbol of regeneration, "Tree of Life".

The right pillar represents a river flowing through the mountains to Inawashiro Lake, and the left pillar represents volcanic ash accumulated by the eruption of Bandai in 1888. The left pillar depicts the interior of the layers of strata.
The four canvas sheets in the center were used to draw "creatures living in the roots" of the trees in a workshop held with elementary school students who will be entering this junior high school, current students who will graduate this year, and their teachers. Together with the participants, we drew the little spirits that watch over the rich forests that take root in this land.

The light of life that is scattered throughout this land.
Without that light, we would not be able to live.
Through the story of the tree of life, I expressed that we are also part of nature.
