Sea Gods and Mountain Gods / Dance of little things / Creatures of the Beginning

Yakushima EKAM (Yakushima, Kagoshima, Japan)

Yakushima soil, wood ash, kamado ink, bengara, pigments, EKAM rocks, paint

I painted this work as a thank-you for the hospitality I received at EKAM, an inn on Yakushima Island.
I collected soot and ashes from the stove kitchens used by the residents of EKAM and used them in my work.

The woman who owns the farm is planting seedlings and seeds of fruit trees every day in order to create a "forest where people can eat.
From the field, we could see the majestic mountains and the sea, and it was a place that showed us exactly how we live in the midst of nature. During my stay, I took a late-night bath in an underwater hot spring, a hot spring that appears with the ebb and flow of the tide. Everyone, men and women alike, soaked in the hot springs and looked up at the sky, feeling as if we were somehow inside the mother body. Well, maybe this is how people naturally find something invisible like God in nature. With this thought in mind, I painted a sea god and a mountain god on the wall of the work shed in the field. To celebrate the completion of the mural, I asked a dancer, Kae Minami, to dance the dance of birth.

Nature and we are always connected to each other.
