ARTIST STATEMENT
⾔葉は⼈間と話す為のもの
もっと⽣命の根源的エネルギーと触れあいたいから 絵を描く
「描く」という⾏為の⾔語化できない衝動には
植物たちが⽣き延びるために
蔦や葉を伸ばしてゆくものと似た切実さがあるように感じている

訪れた土地の自然素材を用いてその場所の記憶を刻む絵画やインスタレーション作品を制作している。草木や花びらから抽出した染液、波打ち際に打ち上げられた貝殻や鉱物、民家のストーブに残る煤、森に降り積もった土。これらはすべてその土地が持つ固有の「色」として作品の中に息づいている。時間をかけて顔料を抽出する過程は、土地と向き合い、対話を重ねる行為でもある。
こうして生み出される現代の壁画は、土地の精霊と共鳴しながら、そこに生きる人々や自然のエネルギーを未来へとつなぐ。代表作には訪れた土地で採取した自然素材を顔料化し地域住民や学生と協働して壁画を制作する《Becoming the Land》がある。

Haruna Sugisaki creates paintings and installations that inscribe the memory of the places she visits, using natural materials gathered from each site. Plant dyes extracted from leaves and petals, shells and minerals washed ashore, soot left in household stoves, and soil accumulated in the forest—all become pigments that embody the distinctive “colors” of the land. The process of extracting pigments over time is, for Sugisaki, a form of dialogue—an act of listening and responding to the land itself.
The contemporary murals that emerge from this practice resonate with the spirit of place, interweaving the energies of the people and natural environments that inhabit it, and carrying them forward into the future. Among her representative works is Becoming the Land, in which she transforms locally collected materials into pigments and collaborates with residents and students to create large-scale murals. Through these works, Sugisaki explores how the shared act of making can reconnect humanity with the living memory of the earth.
