Inawashiro clay, lotus leaves and stalks, water chestnut, Japanese rowan, and soot.
This artwork depicts four distinct scenes of Inawashiro.
On the wall directly in front of the restroom, I have captured the presence of the local flora. In Inawashiro, nature radiates a quiet brilliance within the everyday landscape; I have given form to this invisible essence as spirits.
On the wall to the right, I have portrayed the pulse of wildlife. Here, I expressed the raw power of animals living resiliently amidst a harsh natural environment, just as I felt it during my time in Inawashiro.
To the left, the spirits I painted were inspired by "Nakanosawa Kokeshi" dolls. This piece serves as a talisman, a protective charm watching over the future of the children growing up in this land.
On the back wall, I have depicted Mount Bandai and the gaze that people cast toward it. The jar at the summit is a symbol used to seal away the mythical "Tenaga-Ashinaga" (Long-Armed and Long-Legged Monsters). The mountain watches the people, and the people, in turn, gaze upon the mountain. Everything exists within a balance of light and shadow—it is this profound relationship that this entire mural seeks to manifest.
The pigments used in this work are derived from the natural materials of Inawashiro. This mural is painted with the "memories of color" rooted in this land: soil from the fields, lotus leaves and stalks, water chestnuts, Japanese rowan, and soot. I hope you feel the deep connection to this earth through these colors.
